Fresh controversy has rocked the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was suspended by a faction of the party in Adamawa State.
The development has triggered sharp reactions, with former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, strongly dismissing the move.
Lawal Fires Back
Reacting to the announcement, Lawal described those behind the alleged suspension as unserious, questioning both their credibility and authority within the party.
“If some people take heavy Indian hemp, they can claim to be President of Nigeria… don’t consider them as normal people,” he said.
He went further to challenge the legitimacy of the factional figure, Raji Zumo, who announced the suspension.
“Raji has no reasonable position in the ADC that empowers him to speak on behalf of the party,” Lawal added.

The crisis escalated after Raji Zumo addressed journalists, claiming that Atiku Abubakar, Lawal, and a party official had been suspended.
The announcement immediately sparked backlash from key stakeholders within the party.
Party Leadership Rejects Claim
Adamawa State ADC chairman, Shehu Yohanna, also distanced the party from the development, describing the claim as baseless.
He questioned Zumo’s standing in the party, noting that he had been absent for a long period before resurfacing with such a declaration.

Amid the escalating tension, an Adamawa State High Court has intervened by halting planned party congresses.
The presiding judge ordered that all activities be suspended pending the outcome of an ongoing legal battle, with the case adjourned to April 15, 2026.

The latest development highlights the ongoing internal divisions within the party, as multiple factions continue to battle for control in Adamawa State.
Despite the noise, Lawal maintained that he was unaware of the court proceedings, insisting that the claims against Atiku should not be taken seriously.
