A social media user has sparked reactions online after recounting how a former coursemate allegedly used money contributed by classmates to plan his wedding instead of starting a business or learning a vocational skill.
According to the woman, members of their class had come together to raise ₦1.2 million for the man, who had reportedly been unemployed for six years. The funds were intended to help him acquire a skill, start a small business, and improve his financial situation.
However, she claimed that the group was left stunned when the beneficiary later shared his wedding invitation in their class group chat.
When questioned about the unexpected development, the man reportedly explained that he had decided to marry his girlfriend of four years because he now had “a little money” and felt it was the right time to take the next step in their relationship.
The revelation was said to have been met with silence from group members, many of whom believed the funds had been provided for a different purpose.
According to the woman, the situation became even more surprising when the man allegedly sent another message requesting additional financial support for the wedding.
She claimed that he informed the group that his wedding budget stood at ₦3.2 million and appealed to his former classmates to help him cover the expenses, stating that he could not finance the ceremony on his own.
The request reportedly did not sit well with members of the group, who felt disappointed by how the initial contribution had been utilized. The woman further alleged that shortly afterward, the man was removed from the group chat.
Sharing the story online, she wrote:
“My coursemates and I contributed ₦1.2 million for one of our classmates who has been jobless for the past six years.
We raised the money to help him learn a skill or start a small business so he could get back on his feet.
Just last week, he sent his wedding invitation in the group.
The whole group went silent.
When we asked him why, he said since he now had ‘a little money,’ he decided it was the right time to marry his girlfriend of four years.
We said nothing.
He sent another message:
‘Guys please, I can’t do this alone. My wedding budget is ₦3.2 million. I need your support.’
They removed him from the group immediately.”
