“Peter Obi Is Just Another Buhari!” — Sola Kuti Sparks Outrage Online, Exposes Nigeria’s Real Problem.

Media personality Sola Kuti has argued that Nigeria’s persistent political and economic challenges stem more from the country’s governing structure than from the individuals elected into office.

Speaking during a discussion on national politics, Kuti warned Nigerians against believing that a change in leadership alone is enough to transform the nation, insisting that deeper structural reforms are required.

Comparing expectations around Peter Obi and Buhari

According to Kuti, the enthusiasm many Nigerians currently have for Peter Obi is similar to the optimism that surrounded former President Muhammadu Buhari before he assumed office.

He recalled how Buhari was widely celebrated by supporters who believed his administration would tackle corruption, improve governance, and address many of the country’s longstanding problems.

However, Kuti noted that the reality of Buhari’s presidency fell far short of the expectations many Nigerians had at the time.

Drawing a direct comparison between the two politicians, he said:

“Peter Obi, for me, is just another Buhari.”

‘The system is the real problem’

Expanding on his argument, Kuti maintained that Nigeria’s biggest obstacle is not necessarily its leaders but the system within which they operate.

He described the country’s political structure as deeply flawed, arguing that even well-intentioned leaders often struggle to deliver meaningful change because of institutional constraints and entrenched interests.

“The point that I’m trying to make is that if the system is broken, there’s nothing you can do when you get there,” he said.

According to him, Nigerians frequently focus their attention on individual politicians while overlooking the structural issues that continue to undermine governance and national development.

Buhari’s presidency as an example

Kuti pointed to Buhari’s time in office as evidence of how difficult it can be for any leader to succeed within an ineffective political framework.

Despite previously holding reservations about the former president, he said Buhari’s inability to achieve many of the reforms expected of him reinforced his belief that the system itself requires urgent attention.

“No matter how much I didn’t like Buhari, I realised that a soul like him with such principles, in quotes, could go into government and achieve absolutely nothing,” Kuti stated.

Call for institutional reform

For Kuti, the key lesson from Buhari’s presidency is that Nigeria’s future depends less on who occupies the presidency and more on whether the country’s institutions, policies, and governance structures are fundamentally reformed.

His remarks have since generated discussion online, with many Nigerians debating whether the nation’s challenges are primarily the result of leadership failures or deeper systemic problems that transcend individual administrations.
