AC Milan have reportedly reached an agreement with Portuguese coach Rúben Amorim to become the club’s new head coach, following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri.

The Rossoneri have been searching for a new manager since parting ways with Allegri on 25 May, after failing to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. According to reports in Italy, Amorim quickly emerged as the club’s leading candidate after several weeks of internal discussions and evaluations of multiple options.

Amorim set for Milan move

The former Sporting CP and Manchester United manager is expected to sign a two-year contract, with an option for a further season. The agreement is said to be worth around €3.5 million per year, with performance-related bonuses tied to trophies and Champions League qualification.

Amorim has been without a club since leaving Manchester United in January. He was initially thought to be planning a short break from coaching, but Milan’s approach reportedly changed his immediate plans.

The 41-year-old is expected to travel to Italy shortly to finalise the deal and begin preparations for the upcoming season.

A long-held admiration for Milan

Reports from both Italian and Portuguese media suggest that Milan’s interest carried special meaning for Amorim, who has long admired the club.

In a 2017 interview with Tribuna Expresso, he reflected on his childhood football inspirations:

“As a child I liked watching Benfica and Milan. I remember watching Milan videos with Maldini, Baresi, Gullit, Rijkaard and Savićević. My childhood dreams were to play for Benfica and Milan. I achieved one of them. Now I must become a coach at the other.”

Milan move ahead of rivals

Amorim is said to have been preferred over several other candidates, including Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle, whose appointment would have required negotiations with the Saudi club.

With Amorim currently unattached, Milan were able to move quickly and secure an agreement with minimal delay. He is now expected to lead the club’s rebuilding project ahead of the new season.
