Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has made a bold declaration about his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 election.
If he becomes president, he says he will abolish indigeneship. Every Nigerian will be treated equally as a citizen of the federation, regardless of tribe or region.
“If I become president, I will abolish indigeneship and allow only citizenship. Every Nigerian will be a member of the federation.”
He also said Nigerians should stop identifying themselves mainly by region, religion, or ethnicity. The country must come first above all divisions.
“We are first and foremost citizens of Nigeria. All this ‘I’m from the North, East, West, and South’ and calling people to vote for you based on religion and ethnicity wouldn’t happen.”
The internet is reacting. One person wrote: “This is the kind of leadership we need. Indigeneship has held us back for too long.” Another said: “He is saying this because he is from Rivers State. Would he say it if he were from a minority tribe?”
Someone else added: “Every Nigerian should have equal rights anywhere in the country. I support this 100%.”
