The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has rejected the recent strike notice issued by its chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), citing a failure to follow proper procedures.

ASUU UNILAG Orders Strike

On Tuesday, ASUU UNILAG announced that lecturers would withdraw their services starting Wednesday over unpaid salaries for January and February. The union’s chapter chairman, Prof Idou Keinde, explained that lecturers had not received the full complement of their salaries, including the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance.

“We will not resume work until our full salaries are paid,” Keinde stated.

UNILAG Responds

In response, UNILAG, through its Head of Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, emphasized that the university remains committed to engaging with ASUU to resolve the outstanding issues, particularly the unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances.

“The Management of the University of Lagos has noted reports circulating in the media that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG Chapter, at its Congress held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, directed its members to suspend their services over alleged unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances.

Management observes that due process was not followed in making this declaration. Nevertheless, in its commitment to the welfare of staff and students, the university has continued to engage with the ASUU Executive to address all issues,” the statement read.

Ongoing Negotiations

The situation remains under negotiation as both parties work toward a resolution, with UNILAG reiterating its commitment to addressing staff concerns while ensuring minimal disruption to students’ academic activities.
