Somali Referee Omar Artan Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup After US Entry Denial
Somalian referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being denied entry into the United States, bringing an abrupt end to his hopes of becoming the first official from Somalia to referee at football’s biggest tournament.
Artan, who was named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025, was reportedly stopped by immigration authorities upon arrival at Miami International Airport and subsequently left the country.
FIFA later confirmed that the experienced match official would no longer be part of the World Cup after efforts to resolve the situation with US authorities proved unsuccessful.
FIFA Confirms Withdrawal
In an official statement, FIFA said:
“FIFA can confirm that match official Omar Abdulkadir Artan will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States.
“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr Artan’s status will not be changed at present.”
Artan had been selected among the tournament’s referees and was expected to join fellow officials at FIFA’s refereeing base in Miami, where preparations for the competition are taking place.
All referees and assistant referees assigned to the World Cup are required to remain at the Florida training centre throughout the tournament for technical briefings, fitness programmes, and security-related activities.
Somalia Seeks Answers
No official reason has been publicly provided for Artan’s denial of entry.
However, Somalia is among the countries affected by travel restrictions introduced by the administration of US President Donald Trump, prompting speculation that the policy may have played a role in the decision.
Officials from Somalia’s Ministry of Sports and diplomatic representatives stated that Artan was travelling with valid documentation, including a diplomatic passport issued to facilitate his participation in the tournament.
The Somali Football Federation has reportedly contacted FIFA seeking clarification over the incident and the circumstances surrounding the referee’s exclusion.
Artan Remains Positive
Despite the disappointment, Artan expressed gratitude to FIFA and CAF for their support and vowed to continue working towards future opportunities.
“I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support, and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future,” he said.
“I want to thank the football family for their messages and wish my colleagues every success during the World Cup. I look forward to joining them again in future competitions.”
A Major Blow for Somali Football
Artan became a FIFA-listed referee in 2018 and has officiated at several major continental tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations.
His absence from the 2026 World Cup represents a significant disappointment not only for the official himself but also for Somali football, which had hoped to see one of its own make history on the sport’s biggest stage.
While the setback has ended his World Cup dream for now, Artan’s rise through the ranks of international refereeing continues to serve as an inspiration for aspiring match officials across Somalia and the wider African continent.
