The Federal Government has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians living in South Africa, urging them to stay alert ahead of planned anti-foreigner demonstrations.
The advisory, released through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, follows disturbing viral videos showing African immigrants being confronted and, in some cases, attacked.
According to the notice, protests in cities like East London, Cape Town, Durban, and KwaZulu-Natal have already turned violent — with reports of looting, property damage, and injuries.
Authorities also revealed that more demonstrations are expected in Gauteng Province between April 27–29, raising concerns about further escalation.
Nigerians have been strongly advised to:
- Avoid protest areas
- Stay indoors where possible
- Follow local news updates
- Remain law-abiding
Business owners were specifically urged to shut down operations during the protest period, especially around Freedom Day, as foreign-owned businesses are often targeted.
Meanwhile, NiDCOM confirmed that the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg is working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of citizens.
The situation has sparked growing concern, with calls for stronger protection of African migrants across the region.
