A 38-year-old woman has reportedly ended her relationship after what was meant to be a weekend visit to her boyfriend’s mother took an unexpected turn into what she described as a “cooking test” for marriage readiness.
According to accounts shared by a friend, she had been invited to spend the weekend at her to-be mother-in-law’s home, an invitation she accepted with excitement, hoping it would be an opportunity to bond and strengthen their relationship.
However, upon arrival, she was allegedly asked to prepare egusi and vegetable soup using ingredients already provided.
Wanting to make a good impression, she reportedly turned to YouTube for guidance while cooking, but the final result did not go as planned, with the meal described as overly salty after tasting.
The situation reportedly escalated when the boyfriend’s mother evaluated her cooking and expressed concerns about her suitability for marriage. A condition was then allegedly given for her to improve her cooking skills within six months before any further steps could be considered.
Reacting to the experience, the woman said:
“Any woman setting cooking exams before marriage will definitely want to control her marriage.”
She later made the decision to end the relationship after returning home, calling her boyfriend to communicate her decision.
According to her, the experience made her uncomfortable, as she felt it was less about partnership and more about being tested for domestic expectations.
The incident has since sparked conversations around traditional expectations in relationships, particularly the pressure placed on women to prove domestic skills during marriage introductions. While some see such expectations as cultural preparation, others argue it reflects outdated standards that may create tension in modern relationships before marriage even begins.
