The presidential candidate of the Peter Obi under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has described June 12 as more than just a date on the calendar, saying it represents a key pillar of Nigeria’s democratic identity.
In a message marking Democracy Day, he reflected on the historical and political significance of June 12, noting that it remains a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey and collective struggle for good governance.
According to him, the day should serve as a moment of national reflection for citizens who value democratic principles. He stressed that each June 12 raises important questions about the country’s progress, especially regarding elections, accountability, and the relationship between leaders and the people.
He said:
“What June 12 Should Mean to Us Nigerians. Today, we observe a day that should mean a great deal to us as a people who cherish democratic principles. Every year on June 12, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of our nation.
It serves as an annual benchmark for asking important questions: Are our elections today as transparent as they were in 1993? Is the social contract being honoured? Are the institutions of governance truly serving the people?
Ultimately, June 12 is a powerful blend of reflection and aspiration. It honours a fractured past while serving as a constant and foundational reminder of the immense power inherent in the collective democratic will of the Nigerian people.”
He further noted that June 12 is not only about remembering past political struggles but also about reaffirming democratic resilience and the importance of citizens’ voices in shaping governance.
Obi added that a stronger democratic system is still possible in Nigeria if institutions and leaders remain committed to transparency, fairness, and respect for the will of the people.
He concluded that June 12 should continue to inspire Nigerians to demand better governance and strengthen democratic values across the country.
