Peter Obi Says He Is Ready to Take Kenneth Okonkwo to Court Over Allegations
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he is prepared to pursue legal action against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over allegations made against him.
Obi made the remarks during an interview with broadcaster Rufai Oseni, where he addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding claims recently made by his former political ally.
According to Obi, the matter moved beyond ordinary political criticism when Okonkwo suggested that he had additional allegations he intended to reveal in the future.
The former Anambra State governor said a court case would provide the appropriate platform for all claims to be examined publicly and transparently.
Obi Calls for Public Scrutiny of Political Leaders
Speaking during the interview, Obi argued that anyone seeking public office should be willing to subject themselves to scrutiny regarding their character, integrity, competence, and qualifications.
He maintained that legal proceedings would allow Nigerians to hear any accusations against him and assess the evidence for themselves.
“The issue of taking Kenneth Okonkwo to court wouldn’t have arisen if he had stopped at those allegations. But he claimed he still has more he would expose about me in the future.
“So I am very happy to take him to court so that he can expose me publicly, alongside other Nigerians. If any of them has any criminal allegations against me, they should bring it to court.
“I think as a leader, this is time to avail ourselves for scrutiny by the public so that people can hear all the bad things about us. Because it is important that our future leaders must be who they say they are in terms of character, integrity, competence, qualifications and everything.
“So once he said that, I said wait a minute, we must go further. So people can hear.”
What Triggered the Dispute?
The controversy stems from allegations made by Kenneth Okonkwo, who accused Obi of wrongdoing involving party affairs and the handling of political aspirants seeking elective positions.
Okonkwo alleged that Obi, alongside some South-East leaders of the NDC, collected additional funds from aspirants seeking legislative tickets after they had already paid the party’s official fees.
The claims generated significant debate within political circles and on social media, with supporters of both men weighing in on the issue.
Obi Rejects Allegations
Obi has strongly denied the allegations and insists that any claims against him should be tested through the legal process.
According to him, taking the matter to court would ensure that all parties have the opportunity to present their evidence openly while allowing the public to judge the facts for themselves.
His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians discussing the allegations, the prospect of legal action, and the broader issue of accountability among political leaders.
