Clubs in the EFL Championship have officially rejected plans to introduce a VAR-style system for next season — and the reasons are sparking debate.
The proposed system, known as Football Video Support (FVS), was pitched by Professional Game Match Officials Limited as a lighter, cheaper version of VAR, allowing managers to challenge decisions during matches.
Sounds good, right? Not quite.
Most clubs pushed back hard — and the idea has now been completely dropped.

- Cost concerns: Clubs fear the financial strain of adding new tech
- Game flow: Stoppages could disrupt the pace fans love
- Matchday experience: Nobody wants long delays killing the vibe
So for now, it’s business as usual — no VAR drama, just traditional refereeing (and the usual controversies 😅).
Interestingly, this puts England behind countries like Spain, Italy, and Germany, where video review is already part of second-division football.
Still, some managers aren’t convinced by the rejection. A few have openly said they want VAR, arguing it leads to fairer decisions.
But for now? Championship clubs have chosen simplicity over technology.
