A Nigerian man has sparked widespread reactions online after sharing the story of a commercial tricycle rider, popularly known as a keke rider, who reportedly returned ₦2.5 million that was mistakenly transferred to his account by a passenger.
The story, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter), has drawn attention to the rider’s honesty and integrity, especially given the significant amount involved.
According to the narrator, the incident occurred shortly after the rider dropped off a passenger at a bank earlier in the day. The passenger had allegedly intended to transfer ₦2,500 as payment for the trip but mistakenly sent ₦2.5 million instead.
Sharing the rider’s account, the X user wrote:
“My keke guy told me something this morning that left me speechless. The passenger he carried to the bank mistakenly transferred ₦2.5 million to him instead of ₦2,500.”
The rider reportedly discovered the unexpected credit alert while eating at a restaurant after completing the trip.
“He noticed the alert after stopping at a restaurant to eat, and according to him, all kinds of thoughts started running through his head at once,” the narrator added.
Despite the temptation that may have come with receiving such a large sum, the rider allegedly chose to do the right thing. He reportedly drove from Abakpa to Independence Layout in search of the passenger and eventually found him inside the bank.
“But despite everything, he drove all the way back from Abakpa to Independence Layout, walked into the bank, found the man, and informed him immediately,” the post stated.
According to the account, the passenger was stunned when he checked his transaction history and realized the error.
“The man checked his debit alert, shouted ‘Jesus!’ in shock, and immediately realized the mistake,” the narrator claimed.
However, what has generated the most debate online is the reward allegedly given to the rider after he returned the money.
The X user claimed that after recovering the ₦2.5 million, the passenger handed the rider only ₦500 as appreciation for his honesty and the effort he made to locate him.
“After recovering ₦2.5 million, the only thing the man gave my keke rider for his honesty and fuel was ₦500. Just five hundred naira,” the post read.
“It wasn’t even enough to cover the fuel he spent looking for him.”
The story has since sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians praising the rider’s integrity while criticizing the alleged reward as inadequate, considering the amount recovered and the effort involved in returning it.
