Singida Black Stars have cleared Nigerian goalkeeper Amas Obasogie of match-fixing allegations and reinstated him to the first team following a preliminary internal investigation.

The club had earlier suspended the former Bendel Insurance F.C. shot-stopper for three months on February 27 after a series of costly mistakes in recent matches raised suspicions among supporters and club officials.

Investigation clears goalkeeper

Singida Black Stars have now lifted the suspension after investigators found no evidence linking Obasogie to any form of match manipulation.

In a statement signed by chief executive officer Jonathan Cassano, the club explained that concerns first arose after several errors during matches against Flambeau du Centre in the CAF Confederation Cup, as well as domestic league fixtures against Pamba Jiji F.C. and Namungo F.C..

However, after reviewing the incidents and hearing the goalkeeper’s explanation, the club concluded that the mistakes were purely technical errors made during matches and not deliberate actions.

“After the initial investigation, the player’s defense, and a clear statement from the club’s general manager, it has been determined that there is no evidence of match-fixing or deliberate misconduct,” the club said.

Obasogie reinstated

During his suspension, Obasogie strongly denied any involvement in match manipulation and pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.

The club also revealed that the goalkeeper has apologised for the mistakes that sparked the controversy and has promised to improve his performances moving forward.

“Amas Obasogie has apologised for the circumstances that gave rise to these interpretations and has promised to work on the shortcomings that emerged to improve his level and restore the trust of fans and stakeholders,” the statement added.

With the suspension now lifted, the Nigerian goalkeeper has been cleared to immediately return to action with the squad.

The decision comes as a major relief for Obasogie, whose brief suspension had cast uncertainty over his future at the Tanzanian club. ⚽
