Portugal defender Rúben Dias has rallied behind captain Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism that surfaced after the Seleção’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Manchester City centre-back played down the scrutiny surrounding Ronaldo’s performance, insisting that the criticism is merely part of football and has no impact on the squad.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Dias described the backlash as “noise” and stressed that the team remains focused on its objectives.
“It’s not a problem for us. It’s insignificant, just a bit of noise. It’s part of the game,” Dias said.
Dias Refuses to Single Out Ronaldo
Ronaldo, who made history by becoming the first player to feature in six FIFA World Cups, was unable to get on the scoresheet as Portugal were held by a resilient DR Congo side in Houston.
Despite the spotlight inevitably falling on the Portuguese captain, Dias insisted that responsibility for the result lies with the entire team rather than any individual player.
“Above all, the criticism isn’t aimed at just one player. Cristiano is the centre of attention, but I think all of us are under scrutiny,” Dias explained.
The defender added that dealing with external criticism is nothing new for the national team and believes the players have learned to block out distractions.
“I don’t think anything out of the ordinary is happening. It’s always been like this since I’ve been here, and I think it will continue to be. In the end, it’s just noise. We shut it out and focus on ourselves.”
Portugal Camp Dismisses Rumours of Division
Dias also rejected speculation suggesting there may be tensions within the Portugal squad, particularly rumours involving Ronaldo and midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
The 28-year-old emphasized that the dressing room remains united and fully committed to achieving success at the World Cup.
“For all of us, it’s not an issue. We’re united in the belief that difficulties are positive and that it’s through them we’ll see what we’re made of,” he said.
According to Dias, the players view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than causes for concern.
“We see them as an opportunity to create something positive. My mind doesn’t go in that direction. I don’t pay attention when those things are thrown at us. I don’t think any of us do. It shouldn’t even be an issue.”
Early Challenges Could Benefit Portugal
While Portugal were expected to begin their campaign with a victory, Dias believes the draw could ultimately prove valuable as the team seeks to improve throughout the tournament.
The defender stressed that success at a World Cup is built on continuous progress rather than flawless performances from the outset.
“You never look for perfection in this kind of competition,” Dias said.
“I think the sooner challenges appear, the better. You only win if the team has the ability to keep improving game after game. I don’t expect perfect scenarios. The most important thing is to stay grounded.”
Focus Turns to Uzbekistan
Portugal will now shift their attention to their next Group K fixture against Uzbekistan on June 23, where they will be aiming to secure their first victory of the tournament and strengthen their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
With the squad remaining united and determined, Dias believes Portugal have what it takes to respond positively and mount a serious challenge for World Cup glory.
