Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a club-record deal worth up to £100 million.
The agreement includes an initial fee of £92.5 million, with an additional £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons, making Tonali one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.
The 26-year-old midfielder arrives in North London after three seasons at Newcastle, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders.
“There was only one club”
Speaking after completing the move, Tonali dismissed reports linking him with several other clubs, insisting Tottenham was always his preferred destination.
“I’m very happy to be here. People said there were four or five clubs interested—there was only one,” Tonali said.
“I spoke to the head coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football.
“It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always experienced an incredible atmosphere created by the fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”
Tonali joins fellow summer signing Mateus Fernandes as Tottenham continue a major squad rebuild under manager Roberto De Zerbi ahead of the new campaign.
Emotional farewell to Newcastle
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023 in a deal worth £55 million. Although his time at the club was interrupted by a 10-month suspension for breaching Italian betting regulations, he returned strongly and regained his place as a key figure in Eddie Howe’s side.
He also played a crucial role in Newcastle’s 2025 Carabao Cup triumph, helping the Magpies end their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
In an emotional farewell message, the midfielder expressed his gratitude to the club, his teammates, manager Eddie Howe, and the supporters.
“Thank you to the staff and my teammates for believing in me and helping me grow.
“A special mention to the gaffer, Eddie, who’s been a real guiding figure and always had my back throughout this journey.
“This city gave me more than football. It gave me a home, moments I’ll hold onto forever, and people I’ll always be grateful for. Thank you for everything.”
De Zerbi hails new signing
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi welcomed Tonali’s arrival, describing the Italian as “a special player.”
According to the Spurs boss, Tonali made it clear throughout the transfer process that Tottenham was his preferred destination despite interest from several other clubs.
The midfielder is expected to play a key role in De Zerbi’s plans as Spurs look to strengthen their squad and compete for major honours in the upcoming season.
