The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a comfortable 2–0 win over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final, but for head coach Eric Chelle, the match offered more than just a place in the final.
The encounter at The Valley Stadium gave the Super Eagles boss a chance to assess new players and test tactical ideas ahead of upcoming competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Attack shows promise
One of the standout positives was Nigeria’s attacking display, especially the performance of debutant Femi Azeez, who scored twice on his first appearance.
The forward impressed with his pace, directness, and movement in the final third, although the coach noted that there is still room for improvement in his overall technical play.
“He scored two goals, congratulations to him, but also lost a lot of balls technically, so I’m not happy,” Chelle said.
“He won the ball back many times… but for the first time, we can say, ‘Azeez, congratulations.’”
Midfield balance still developing
The midfield trio of Tochukwu Nnadi, Alhassan Yusuf, and Samson Tijani showed discipline and work rate, helping Nigeria control possession for long periods and pressing effectively after losing the ball.
However, the game also exposed a lack of creativity from deeper positions, with the team relying heavily on wing play and quick transitions.
Defensive stability encouraging
At the back, Nigeria delivered a solid and organised performance.
The central defensive pairing of Chibuike Nwaiwu and Igoh Ogbu remained composed throughout, while debutant goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo impressed with his calm presence and sharp shot-stopping.
His performance added to growing optimism about increased depth in Nigeria’s goalkeeping and defensive options.
Overall, the win gave Chelle valuable insight into emerging talents as the Super Eagles continue their build-up toward future international competitions.
