The opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has selected former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Abdulsalam emerged as the party’s choice following his resignation as deputy governor earlier this year amid political differences with Governor Abba Yusuf over the governor’s defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He stepped down in March, just weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against him.
His nomination was announced after an NDC stakeholders’ meeting led by former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, at his Miller Road residence in Kano.
Kwankwaso disclosed the development in a video shared on Facebook by his media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, on Friday morning. He also announced Nasiru Gawuna, the APC’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kano election, as the NDC’s senatorial candidate for Kano Central.
Gawuna defected from the APC in March after months of expressing dissatisfaction over what he described as marginalisation following his unsuccessful governorship bid. He is expected to replace Senator Rufai Hanga as the party’s candidate for the district.
The NDC had earlier unveiled Kassim Batayya as its senatorial candidate for Kano South. However, the party is yet to announce its candidate for Kano North.
