Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied allegations linking him to statements supporting banditry. He says videos and messages being circulated about him were doctored and misrepresented.
In a statement on his verified Facebook page, Gumi said some of his past interviews on insecurity in Nigeria were being deliberately twisted by biased individuals and groups.
He rejected any suggestion that he has ever supported or justified criminal activities.
“I hereby state unequivocally that any video clip, written statement, or message attributed to me suggesting support for banditry does not emanate from me.”
He urged the public, media, and authorities to ignore what he described as fake and manipulated content. He also warned that continued spread of such claims could attract legal consequences.
The cleric expressed hope for peace and unity in the country. He sympathized with victims of violence across Nigeria.
The internet is reacting. One person wrote: “If the videos are fake, he should take them to court. Not just cry online.”
Another said: “Gumi has said controversial things before. This is not the first time he is being called out.”
Someone else added: “Whether the videos are doctored or not, his past statements are still there for everyone to see.”
A different voice said: “He should sue those spreading fake news. That is the only way to clear his name.”
