Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has reflected on his journey to success, saying that luck played a meaningful role alongside hard work, preparation, and determination.

Speaking in a recent interview with Korty EO, Elumelu discussed the many factors that shaped his rise in business and leadership. He emphasized that success is not always a straightforward outcome of being the most intelligent, talented, or hardworking person in a field.

According to him, outcomes are often influenced by timing, access to opportunities, and circumstances that may be outside one’s control. While effort and discipline remain important, he noted that they do not always guarantee success on their own.

Elumelu, who chairs Heirs Holdings, described himself as someone who has benefited from favorable timing and opportunities throughout his career. In his words, he considers himself “a product of luck,” while still acknowledging the importance of consistent effort and readiness when opportunities appear.

“At times you don’t come out successful because you are the best in class or because you’re the fittest or most energetic. Sometimes you need luck, and I’m a product of luck,” he said.

The remarks highlight his view that success is often a blend of preparation and chance, rather than effort alone.
